Anthony F. Templin of
Ogilvie died Sunday, October 22, 2000, at Kanabec Hospital in Mora. He as 75 years old.
He was born to Frank
and Katherine Templin February 18, 1925, at Gilman, MN. He was raised on a 160-acre farm near
Gilman and at the age of 7 years, learned to play the harmonica and later in
life played the accordion. Due to severely deformed feet, which were corrected
after seven surgeries, his education was cut short after the third grade.
During the Depression days in the 1930s, he helped his father support the
family by working with the WPA piling rocks, for which he was paid 50 cents per
day. His father died when he was 18 and at that time he went to work at the
paper mill in Sauk Rapids. On weekends he would pick up his mother, where she
worked cleaning homes, but he boarded with his sister, Ida. As a young man, he
worked as an undercover policeman and with a tape recorder, helped arrest a
murderer. On returning to Minnesota he worked for farmers near Fairmont, where he met Lorraine Landsteiner.
They were married on May 24,
1952, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Fairmont. For the next four years he worked as a
janitor for Honeymead Corporation in Estherville, IA.
He left after the plant burned. He moved to Foley and worked as a janitor at St. John’s Church in Foley where he stayed for 11 ½ years. They moved to Fairmont in 1965 to care for his father-in-law
whose health was failing and also his mother-in-law who died later that year.
In 1966 they moved back to Mora, where he worked for the highway department,
Blue Water, and Peoples Bank until he became disabled. He enjoyed going
fishing, hunting and playing music. He loved his grandchildren and loved to kid
around with people.
He is survived by his
wife, Lorraine; one daughter, Tina Simons and husband Marvin of Ogilvie; three
sisters, Kate Wiltgen of Foley, Winifred of Brenham, TX, and Adeline Henry of
Pierz; five grandchildren, Aaron, Angie, Ashley, Amanda and Anthony; nieces;
nephews; other relatives; and friends.
Funeral services were
held Thursday, Oct. 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mora. The Rev. William
Vos officiated. Music was provided by Erin Sellner, Joanne Sellner, Cathy
Tweet, Patty Paul, Irv Campbell and Kris Paulson.
Pallbearers were Marvin
Simons, Scott Haffner, Aaron Lang, Todd Haffner, Rodney Haffner, and Robin
Haffner.
Honorary pallbearers
were Jeannine Brekke, Doug Landsteiner, Diane Henry, Carl Templin, Cindy
Landsteiner, Laura Watters, Theresa Jennings, Karen Alvord and Jacki Stevenson.
Burial was at St.
Mary’s Cemetery, Mora.
