ANDREW ROSS WILL
The Last Will & Testament of Andrew Ross
In the name of God Amen: I Andrew Ross of Geo Town in the District of Columbia being sick and weak in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following; that is to say
First and principally I commit my soul into the hands of God Almighty and my body to the earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors herein after named, and for the payment of my funeral expenses and debts I will and direct that a sale shall be made at such time and place as my said executors may deem most proper, and fit first of the house and lot on the corner of Bridge and Washington street and of the three houses and lots on Washington street in George Town aforesaid and in care the amount of the sales of the said property should prove insufficient to pay off the said debts then I will and direct that the house and lot on the east side of High street between Gay and Bridge street now in the occupancy of Wm. Crapley shall be sold, and in case the united amount of the sales of the aforementioned property should still prove insufficient to pay off my debts then such part of my personal property as my executors may fine upon to make good the deficiency. With regard to the house and lot on Bridge street now occupied by myself and family and with regard to all my other property whether real or personal mixed I will and direct that the same shall be held in equal proportions for ten years from the day of my decease by my son Robert, my daughters Rebekah Caroline Hannahette & Matilda Eveline & by my nieces Susan and Ann Ross but in case any of the above named should marry during the ten years aforesaid then and in that case the proportion to which he or she so marrying was entitled shall from the day on which the said marriage takes place be the joint property of those remaining unmarried for the remainder of the aforesaid ten years.
And after the expiration of the said ten years from the day of my decease I further will and direct that the said property be sold by my said executors and equally divided among my surviving children their heirs or assigns with the exception of my son Templin to whom, his heirs executors administrators or assigns no part of said property shall be given.
In the last place I do hereby constitute and appoint my friends Samuel J. Potts, Lewis J. Davidson & Darius Clagett to be my executors of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, satisfying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this eight day of January Anno Dominion one thousand eight hundred and twenty two.
Signed, sealed, published and declared by Andrew Ross the above named testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who at his request, in his presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witness thereto this eight day of January 1822.
