TEMPLIN FAMILY ASSOCIATION

Scribe – Samme Templin                   Winter 2008/2009

*** REUNION - 2010 – SEVIERVILLE/PIGEON FORGE/GATLINBURG,  TN***

***DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED AFTER REUNION PLANS ARE SETTLED***

________________________________________________________________________

2008 Kokomo, IN Reunion

Attendance was good considering the fact that gas prices were through the roof. There were 40 plus attendee’s at the reunion. Fern Miller was the oldest attendee, Braeden Templin was the youngest attendee, and Adele Lancaster traveled the farthest.

Laura Faye Templin had made the Templin Family quilt (which is beautiful) and Harry Templin handled the display of the quilt for all to see and enjoy. The members decided to keep the quilt for the association and display the quilt at future reunions. Those in attendance who had not had a chance to sign the quilt could do so because Laura Faye had left blank blocks for just such folks.

The slate of officers were nominated and approved for the 2008 – 2010 term:

President – Trey Templin, Newton, KS ntfam@templintees.net

V-President – Harry Templin, Old Fort, NC  harry.templin1@verizon.net

Treasurer – John Templin, Leon, KS jdtemplin@sktc.net

Scribe – Samme Templin, Athens, TN MTTemplin@aol.com

Genealogist – Marvin & Samme Templin, Athens, TN MTTemplin@aol.com

Several sites were discussed for the 2010 reunion location and the members decided on the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, TN area with Harry & Midge Templin and Marvin & Samme Templin in charge of the arrangements. Depending upon the best rates possible the date for the reunion will be decided at that time. Several dates ever discussed for the reunion with the understanding that cost has a huge factor in the final decision.

Marvin Templin has scanned in original documents that he has for the lineage of James Templin and Mary Salmon (deeds, wills) and Samuel Templin of Maryland. These records are on DVD and are available through the mail, cost of $12 which includes postage and a portion will go into the association’s treasury. To order send check to: Marvin Templin, 107 County Road 60, Athens, TN 37303

From the President’s Corner:

It seems like it was only yesterday when everyone traveled to Kokomo, IN over fourth of July weekend for the Templin Family Association.  We had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones.  As part of the meeting, a vote occurred electing new officers.  I was nominated as President as you can tell by the article title.  Many of you I have never met, so I thought I would introduce myself.

My name is Trey Alan Templin of Newton, Kansas.  I have a wonderful wife of ten years, Noreen L. Templin.  We have two sons, Andrew John (AJ) Templin and Braeden Shawn Templin and soon to have a wonderful daughter.  I am 33 years old and currently hold a job as a Senior Business Analyst.  My younger brother Gabriel Re Templin is currently attending the University of Arkansas for his master’s degree.  My parents, John Dale and Barbara Kay Templin, live in Leon, Kansas in the same house that I grew up.  We come from the linage line of Samuel Templin.

I realized after attending my second association meeting, that not many young people are involved.  Part of becoming the new President, I was tasked with coming up with some new ideas for bringing in the younger generations.  With that being said, I have created a group on Facebook (www.facebook.com).  If you are a member of Facebook, you can join the group “Templin Family Association” for free.  If you are not a member of Facebook, it is a free organization that allows to you meet new people as well as friends, colleagues, and family.  I personally have been able to connect with old high school classmates that I have not seen in 12 years.

Additionally, there are several other items in the works that we hope to unveil at the next meeting.  I look forward to meeting each one of you at the next meeting in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 2010.  My thoughts and continued prayers go out to every family.

Sincerely,

Trey A. Templin

President, Templin Family Association

Genealogy Corner:

2008 was a very busy year for both Marvin and me. Marvin worked on scanning lots of original documents that we have on the different lineages so that they could be placed in one place for folks to view. This also helps us to review our data and make additions or changes to our work which is always a good thing to do.

Anyone who would like to contribute family information are very welcome to do so.

Ancestry of the James and Mary Salmon Templin Lineage

The genealogy of the Templin Family has been evasive to researchers/genealogist for many years, due to the limited amount of records that we had access to. The word of mouth was really our best source but was not always correct.

There was a lot of traveling involved, searching court house records where possible, and going to a lot of cemeteries. The researchers came up with some information and tried to put it together. They came up with genealogies that made a lot of sense and appeared to be correct. They recorded these genealogies in books, sold them and placed them in Libraries across the country and also in the Library of Congress.  In doing that, it was permanently recorded in History.

Then three things happened. The freedom of information act made accessing records easier, the Internet, which has many people working to put actual records on the Internet so a lot of research can be done at home and then came DNA testing. As all this became available we found that a lot of the old genealogies were not correct.

This is what I have found with the Templin Genealogy. We cannot change what has been recorded or what people believe. We are attempting to put proposed genealogies out with all the records that we can find.

In our search for records we came across a record in the Maryland Archives that listed a John Templin that purchased land in 1709 in Somerset County, Maryland.  We received an E-mail from a Lady that had been doing research on the Salmon/Solman line. She had seen our web page and questioned our lineage on James and Mary Salmon Templin. She also sent me Microfilm numbers that I may want to check out. I ordered the films and found enough documentation to convince me that the James Templin that married Mary Salomon was not out of the Richard Templin line of Chester County,  Pennsylvania.

This file has all the original records that I have been able to locate as of the year 2008, March, 1st for John Templin/Tamplin who purchased property in Somerset County, Maryland in 1709/10.

John Templin appeared on the rent rolls of Somerset County, Maryland in 1709. He purchased 100 Acres from James Sangster on March 9th 1709/10 with 1700 pounds of Tobacco. In this same time period Samuel Mills and Edward Jones purchased property from James Sangster with Tobacco. These two deeds are included in this file but have not been typed. It appears that Templin, Mills and Jones are neighbors. In 1744 John Templin sold his property to Jones and Mills. The area this property was in became Worcester County, Maryland in 1740.  In 1737 and 1741 John Templin purchased property in Sussex County, Delaware.
